Welcome to Chipola Alpacas, our ranch is located in Wewahitchka,Fl in Gulf County. We studied the alpaca business for roughly two years before purchasing our first two Huacaya geldings in August of 2003. We have 30 acres of land that we will be slowly adding new pastures and structures to as our herd grows.

ALPACA FAQS

Alpacas are a smaller cousin to the llama and they are sheared of

their fabulous fiber once a year.

They need less room than other live-stocks for several reasons,

(A) They process what they eat more thoroughly so that they need

less feed, (B) When they graze, they do not pull the grass roots up

killing the plant, (C) Instead of hooves which also kills grass, they

actually walk on a pad and have two toe nails.

They do spit at each other but rarely at humans. They have to be

really frightened to spit at a two legger. The females take eleven

months to have a baby and for alpacas and llamas they are called

'cria'. Sheep produce a LOT of lanolin which collects in the wool making

it smell more than alpacas and because alpacas produce so little lanolin,

it makes washing their fiber in preparation to spin it a breeze.
