Tom Turkey

Narrigansett turkeys are one of the largest and very hardy heritage breeds.

They are gentle of nature and make great outdoor pets. They are good egg layers and are make great setting hens. The eggs are just as good to eat as regular poultry. The main difference is that once refridgerated, the yolks will have a different consistancy than chicken eggs.

Narrs nearly died out when factory raised turkeys became poplular but have recently been moved from critically endangered to the 'watched' list. That should give you a good idea of just how hardy they are.

Blackhead is a condition that causes 80% mortality rate in young turkeys. It is a parasite thea are carried by poultry but doesn't bother the chickens. It is spread through intermeiary hosts such as worms and bugs in the soil. Chickens poop, bugs eat poop containing parasite eggs and turkeys ingest the bugs/worms. There is no cure for blackhead as prevention is the only known way to combat it. It does not seem to bother adult turkeys, just juviniles. So if you have chickens or chickens have been present, you want a grow out pen designated for young poults at least 50 feet away from where any chickens have access to.
